How low have we sunk in this country when physicians and other single-payer health care activists must face arrest for airing their views in a Senate hearing? That’s exactly what happened to the “Baucus 8″, those courageous heroes who insisted that the single-payer message become part of the health care dialogue on the national stage, after legislators declared the single-payer solution “off the table”. The dissenters wanted to express that they favor a public health insurance plan, expanded and improved Medicare for all. The only way for them to be heard was to interrupt the proceedings in Sen. Max Baucus’s (D-Montana) Finance Committee hearing on health care reform. Committee chairman Baucus had the authorities forcefully remove the protesters and arrest them (Baucus 8 Charged).
Four (and possibly all) of the “Baucus 8″ will arrive at the Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg on Tuesday, October 20 (10 a.m. until noon), to a heroes’ welcome. They will be there to participate in the rally for single-payer health care in PA and the nation. You don’t want to miss it.
Joining the Baucus group and many other well-known reform advocates will be Wendell Potter, a former CIGNA executive who saw the light and is now a champion for the single-payer solution.
It’s becoming increasingly clear that the single-payer health care movement in PA and the U.S. will follow the example of the civil rights movement with rallies, marches, sit-ins, and non-violent protest. Let your voice be heard. See you in Harrisburg on October 20.
