She was also strict about establishing rules and “making us be good to people,” says Christian. “She taught us the spiritual side of life and what school can’t teach you.”

No Country for Old Women

Everyone involved gave their unwavering support and implicitly understood that you are either with Avon (the company for women) in its war on breast cancer or you are with the terrorizing few that strayed from the pack and articulated independent (albeit “liberal”) thought about this often fatal disease. And if you are in the latter, you’re sure to get breast cancer.

THOUGHTS FROM AN UNQUIET MIND V
by Jack Lindeman

I almost never premeditate on the best way to produce a favorable impression on someone else. I trust to my intuition and perhaps am less fearful of what I say or do than most thoughtful people. G. has suggested that my ego is constructed of cast iron. This is true only in a superficial sense.

Health Care: News & Notes
Healthcare analysis from the new driver’s seat
by Erica Yurvati

I think that’s a quality our nation really needs throughout this ongoing health care debate, a process that takes time and work, like learning to drive. If our leaders convey a positive attitude and help to assuage irrational fears, then our collective reasoning will be so much stronger.

Four Great Reasons to Vote for Charles Corbit and Carole Snyder on November 3rd

I am shocked, SHOCKED, that the Republican candidates resorted to smear tactics. That is a BRAND NEW strategy for Republicans! I did NOT see that coming!

Scary Isn’t a Kid in a Halloween Costume
by Rosemary & Walter Brasch

The ogres of health reform, also known as Republicans and the insurance industry, have already frightened Americans by spewing lies and hatreds no costumed kid could ever top.

Sex, Silicone, and Suits
by Walter Brasch

Pageant officials had ordered all contestants not to mention God on their applications or at any public event. Apparently, openly believing in God could be seen as detrimental to an organization which holds its beauty contest in Las Vegas, also known as Sin City, USA. Prejean’s view about gay marriage, she later said, was based upon her religious beliefs.
Prejean was second in the Miss USA contest itself; her views may have cost her the national crown.

1,000 Days of Bonus-gate

Before CommonSense2 began -- on January 27, 2007 to be exact, The Harrisburg Patriot News ran a story entitled "Democrats give some staffers bonuses" which detailed a letter written by then state House Majority Leader H. William DeWeese to staffers, each accompanied by a check. The letters pointed out that not all staff qualified for a bonus, so for the benefit of morale, the recipients were directed to tell no one about their good fortune. What could possibly go wrong?

The Road Less Traveled

How Long Does It Take To Make a Mountain?

I looked outside and watched the moonlit world heaving and pitching, watched the split rail fence in front of me rocking to roughly the same chaotic rhythm as the room behind me, and the door frame in my hands. Sometimes, during very traumatic moments in our lives, we remember bizarre details. I noticed my hand on the door frame and my arm trembling, and slowly became aware that my whole body was doing that.

I didn’t think it could be any worse than the eight long years we had with the Bush Crime Family, but it is. Even though Obama was not my first choice—that was the peace candidate, Dennis Kucinich— there was at least a hint of hope after the election. After all, Obama can speak in [...]
